Frontend Web Developer
The Frontend Web Developer collaborates with a distributed team to build tools that enable annotation over the open web.
Hypothesis is seeking a Frontend Web Developer to join our Engineering team. Our vision is a world where annotation is as common as comments, but more useful and engaging. Join us as we extend what the web can do.
About the team
Hypothesis is a small non-profit with big aspirations. We work with online publishers, educators, journalists, and scientists to unlock new capabilities and workflows on the web.
We are a diverse, supportive, highly collaborative, 100% remote team of technologists, educators, scientists, and business people working together to bring new capabilities to the web. We code in the open (our repos are public and liberally licensed) and help drive standards for annotation. We communicate via Slack, video chat, GitHub, and Google Docs across 9 time zones.
About the role
In this role, you will help build browser-based software and user interfaces to support annotation of web pages and other media. You will focus on solving for user needs by contributing across the stack, but with an emphasis on frontend technologies. Our team is small, so flexibility is an asset.
The following is a sampling of the technologies we currently use (if you’re already familiar, great, but please don’t take these as pre-requisites):
- AngularJS, Babel, ES6
- Python, Pyramid, PostgreSQL
- AWS, Elasticsearch
You are someone who loves problem solving. You value simplicity over complexity. You have built web-based applications that are dead simple to use and accessible on a range of user agents. You love writing code that is reliable and bug-free. You find happiness in documenting your work so 6-months-from-now you can drop back in and understand it.
You will be successful at Hypothesis if you:
- Love learning new things,
- Are committed to improving both as a technologist and a human being,
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team,
- Are tenacious, self-directed, and highly motivated,
- Are as adept at collaborating with designers as you are backend developers,
- Enjoy helping others around you grow as developers and be successful,
- Communicate clearly and effectively (this is especially important in a remote organization), and
- Approach your work with a mindset that allows for growth and change.
Does this sound interesting? Drop us a line to tell us what about this role intrigues you and why you think you would be great for Hypothesis. Resumes are helpful, but so are examples of your recent work. We can’t wait to hear from you!

What We're Building
We want to dramatically increase the quality of information in the world, via the feedback loop of crowd-sourced peer review. Hypothes.is will allow community-moderated collaborative annotation of any document. It's based on a new draft standard for annotations, and will leverage a novel kind of linking inside documents. Think: Inverting Wikipedia and taking it out to the rest of the Internet (but with a better reputation model.)
